Video game created by a 16-year-old in a few days shatters records, humiliates professional games designed with mega-budgets | Fortune

Grow a Garden has beaten out video games that take years and millions of dollars to develop. Whether it serves as a chill escape from the onslaught of the real world or simply a way to beat vacation doldrums, a viral Roblox game about gardening has become the surprise hit of the summer. Grow a Garden, created by a 16-year-old in a few days, has shattered records for the most concurrent players of any game in history, beating out video games that take years and millions of dollars to develop.Grow a Garden is as simple as its name suggests — players can fill a plot of land with plants and animals, harvest and sell, trade or steal each others’ bounty. The game is low stress, with an aesthetic reminiscent of Minecraft and a soundtrack of soothing classical tunes such as Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca playing in the background.Coincidence or not, Grow a Garden soared to popularity around the same time that Take-Two Interactive announced it would delay the launch of its wildly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 until next year. In late June, the gardening game logged 21.6 million concurrent players, surpassing Fortnite’s previous record of 15.2 million according to Roblox. While it’s not clear if the GTA audience flocked to this simple gardening game to pass the time until then, the timing reignited the age-old debate about who gamers are and what titles are taken seriously by the video game establishment. It happened with Candy Crush, with puzzle games, with Animal Crossing.

Best Open-World Games Where You Don't Matter

Few games embody utter, cosmic insignificance quite like Dwarf Fortress. The game's simulation just doesn't bend for you. Players aren't the hero or the chosen one in these open-world games, where their existence is largely insignificant.Open-world games usually make you the center of the universe. The story bends to your will. Entire nations hang on your every heroic decision. You are the chosen one, the last hope, the one who can save them all. But then there are the other ones.Kenshi is the definition of sandbox freedom, a game that strips away every last illusion of importance you might have. You start with nothing. No name, no money, and so fragile that a strong gust of wind could probably kill you.In EVE Online's galaxy-spanning MMO, you are not a hero. You are a speck of dust, engaged in a universe of impossibly complex politics, piracy, and interstellar warfare that plays out on a scale that most other games wouldn't even dare to attempt.

Few games obsessed me like SSX Tricky | Eurogamer.net

If the game industry gives me just one last remaster before its remastering machines run dry, please let it be SSX Tric… I have only played a few games in my life with the sort of obsession I had with SSX Tricky. From today’s point of view, when many big publishers are still betting on realistic stylings and serious performances, it’s probably not as simple to make a case for SSX Tricky as it was to make one for a series like Tony Hawk’s. Both may have a killer soundtrack and are certainly beloved sports games for players of my generation, but SSX Tricky could never act as a vehicle for its sport or the sporting personalities behind it.I wanted to perfect every course, and unlock every outfit for every character, and I think I did because SSX Tricky is the kind of game that makes you feel cool in a number of ways which are all equally important. There’s the low skill ceiling - you get to feel cool with very little, and you can invest in your skill and become really good at the game, a feeling I didn’t really get to experience in other sports games until then. Landing a cool trick in SSX Tricky is easy, in part because of the good controls, but also because even the simplest trick looks cool.

Players control one of three characters in the game's three different acts, each having their own skills and abilities, and their own reasons for escaping the village of Wellington Wells.During this time, he had reflected on his state of life, and came up with ideas for We Happy Few in his emotional distress, particularly the idea of a society fixated on drugs and masks. Provost presented this to his creative team, who saw the possibilities of expanding on this. Narrative director Alex Epstein considered the idea similar to Prozac Nation, and where in current times, there is a prescription drug for every conceivable malady. But after a few weeks of consuming murder and horror stories 24/7, I began to feel depressed, like the world was such a dark place.Shanghai-based developer Posh Cat Studio focused on the satisfying thrill of solving life’s small mysteries in this cosy crime caperSometimes, it is just about Mary trying to find a favourite earring, a friend in the crowd – or her mischievous cat. Fallout's Potential Is Wasted On Too Few Games

Fallout could be so much more than an open-world shooter once per decade. The renewed interest in Fallout is incredible to see, so it must be pretty disappointing for Bethesda that all it has to offer right now is a six year old multiplayer spin-off that was widely despised upon release, and a current-gen “upgrade” for a nine year old game that by most accounts made that game worse.I know it wouldn’t be reasonable to expect the launch of Fallout 5 to coincide with the TV series. Games take absurdly long time to make, much longer than TV shows, and Bethesda’s games take the longest to make of them all.I want Fallout 5 as much as the next vault dweller, and I’m going to play it whether it takes five, ten, or 20 years to come out. But, in the meantime, maybe it’s time for Bethesda to realize how much money it’s leaving on the table by having such a narrow vision of what a Fallout game can be.There’s a lot of approaches Bethesda could take to expand Fallout, but I’m partial to Riot’s now-defunct Riot Forge program. Through Forge, Riot partnered with a wide range of indie developers to make original games within the League of Legends universe.

Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow told reporters that center fielder George Springer will be out for a few games due to a mild concussion suffered Tuesday. The question is whether Springer can return sometime during a crucial four-game home series with the hard-charging Oakland Athletics, who are second in the American League West and fighting for a wild-card berth. The A's likely aren't catching the Astros, who are nine games back of Houston with 24 contests remaining. However, the stiff competition may hinder Houston's chances to take the American League's No. 1 seed, which is currently held by the New York Yankees. The 2017 World Series MVP has 30 home runs, 78 RBI and a .389 OPS in 105 games this season.

We Happy Few review: "A dystopian nightmare that's basically Social Anxiety: The Game" | GamesRadar+

I'll play more polished, bigger and more bombastic blockbuster games this year, but We Happy Few will stay with me long after its quests are over. I wouldn't be surprised if the working title for this open world, dystopian nightmare was Social Anxiety: The Game. It's sinister version of a post-war England, of alternative facts, enforced assimilation and missing children feels particularly brutal in 2018, and once its claws are in your brain it won't let go. We Happy Few doesn't so much cut close to the bone as drill right down to the bloody marrow. It doesn't matter if you're an unhappy wimp, a woman with a secret or a diabetic ex-soldier with issues, the world of We Happy Few is an unkind place. Each of the stories you'll play through are dark, with echoes of the best Black Mirror episodes, but each will be subtly different, thanks to the shattering pasts and different skills of it's heroes. Each character has a main storyline and a smattering of side quests, and you'll guzzle everything. It's one of those games - likeUnlike a lot of games where people will turn a blind eye to you scrabbling through their bins or walking around carrying a blade, how you behave in We Happy Fews matters. Not just that, how you look matters, and even if you can fake it, there are downer detectors dotted around the towns and in people's homes, ready to catch you.I can't remember another game that's made me feel so aware of how odd my character, rushing around, punching and stealing, must look. Games like Assassin's Creed have obviously made stealth an integral part of their story and mechanics, but the anxiety in We Happy Few doesn't come from failing a mission.
